Pushwoosh provides code and data processing support to software developers. It can be used to create user profiles and send personalized notifications.

The US military was one of the customers. However, it stopped using it in March due to security concerns. After Reuters exposed the Russia connection, the US disease agency CDC had to remove the Pushwoosh code form its apps. A spokeswoman for the CDC stated that they assumed Pushwoosh to be a Washington DC-area company.

The company appears to be in the United States according
to official documents. It is also listed on social media as an American
business. At various times, it was said that the company was based in
California or Maryland. The headquarters are located in Novosibirsk, according
to Russian public documents. There are approximately 40 employees and the
turnover was equivalent to 2.4 million dollars last year.

“The difference is that Pushwoosh data are sent to Russia from the US to servers managed by a Russian company.” Google and Apple declined comment on Pushwoosh. Appfigures experts claim that the code of the company can be found in almost 8,000 apps in their stores.

Max Konev, the founder of Pushwoosh, stated in an email to Reuters that his company has never attempted to conceal its Russian roots. He wrote, “I am proud of being Russian and would never hide that.” The company explained that it never owned a Russian Federation company after the research was published.
